I’m a gamer at heart.  One of my earliest memories is playing epic games of Risk with my Mom, Dad and sister, and having the strategic notion of not trying to battle for control of Asia finally “click” in my head.  Since then I’ve fallen in love with and sometimes became obsessed with a host of board games (Axis & Allies, Shogun, Supremacy, Gammarauders, Settlers of Cataan), card games (Spades, Bridge, Hearts, Canasta), collectible card games (Magic: the Gathering, Netrunner, Warlord, Dune) and role playing games (Dungeons & Dragons, Vampire, Beyond the Supernatural/Rifts).

Gimme popcorn!

Unfortunately, it’s been awfully hard to find women who love to play these sorts of games as much as I do, and when I do they’re usually already attached to some lucky boyfriend or husband.  As much fun as I have playing these games with my gaming brothers, I often lament not being able to play these games with someone I love, or at least have more women around to add a feminine stamp on the proceedings.

Gaming groups are all too-often a guys club.  I remember one exception in college, when I got involved in a fairly large group of people who enjoyed playing card games, where I learned to play Spades, Hearts, Bridge and a few other card games and got really good at it.  The group was about 40% women, and having a significant female presence and perspective really made the game play a lot more fun.  I was even fortunate enough to date a couple of my female card playing compatriots and they were awesome gals, each totally different from each other but we all shared a love of gaming.

I hope to one day get to go to GenCon, the biggest gaming convention in the United States (recently held in Indianapolis this year).  I imagine it would be awesome to get to go with a girlfriend or spouse and have both of us equally geeked out and excited about being there and gaming our brains out.

A Gaggle of Leias

I think something about having at least a dash of nerd or geek pushes a woman’s sex appeal up quite a few notches.  For instance, take Adrienne Curry– she’s a very attractive Hollywood celebrity in a sea of very attractive Hollywood celebrities, best known for being the winner of the first American’s Next Top Model, being the former Mrs. Peter Brady, and being very willing to produce a slew of bikini-clad and sexy-attired pics readily available on the internet and magazines.  Now, not to knock Ms. Curry, but there are countless hot model/actresses like her all with sexy pics of them all over the place, and they all just fade into a wash of generic eye-candy.  But what I think sets Adrienne Curry apart is her nerd side– she loves online gaming, Star Wars and Sci-Fi.  To me, this gives her an added dimension, some much needed personality to distinguish her from all the other pretty faces and hot bodies out there that are just two-dimensional figures without some inkling as to what they’re like.  Too often, what seems to punch through and distinguish celebrities from all the other pretty faces is spoiled, outrageous, bad behavior.  Yeah sure, it gets you noticed, but it certainly doesn’t increase their appeal beyond silly “bad girl” fantasies.

Being a geek, a nerd– now that’s appealing!

Gaming too hard to bother getting fully dressed

Ms. Curry has a LOT of “hot” photos out there online, but for me this picture is the hottest because who wouldn’t want to come home and find his girl barely clothed and kicking ass at a game?  Do you cheer her on or try and distract her to more live action pursuits?  Those are the kind of dilemmas I’d love to have…

Now the point of this post isn’t that I’m looking for a gamer girl who looks like Adrienne Curry; my point is that I’d love to date a girl who’d love to play Magic: the Gathering with me, or Dungeons & Dragons, or go to GenCon, or totally geek out watching sci-fi and fantasy movies with me.  To me, that would be Epic Win.
