I thought it might be fun to have a “regular” weekly feature so I am going to highlight a sexy song from my iPod each Sunday. A song that puts me in the mood, or brings to mind a certain someone or a certain memory, or evokes any number of warm and fuzzy feelings. Hopefully it’ll be something you find sexy as well.
I’ll kick things off with the song “Melody” by Kate Earl. Kate is a 30 year old singer-songwriter who is from Alaska and is of Filipino and Dutch/Welsh decent.

Singer-songwriter Kate Earl
I downloaded “Melody” when it was the iTunes Single of the Week in 2009 and was instantly smitten by the song and the lyrics and didn’t realize she was so gorgeous on top of all that until I watched the video on YouTube.
Whoa. That’s quite the video…
This might be an unusual selection as a sexy song because it’s not really singing about loving someone else… It’s about loving yourself and finding strength, peace and harmony within. No one wants a needy person who lets their own hang-ups or previous relationship disasters define them, so when someone’s got that sort of self-assurance it’s very sexy. But it’s not that aggressive or almost angry sort of empowerment song, it’s not reactionary but rather more… evolutionary I suppose.
no matter what has ever come to me
i got my own brand of company
i got da da da inside my head
and i play songs back to back until i got to bed
What really draws me to this song outside of the beautiful sound of her voice are the lyrics. These are the words of a singer and songwriter who’s in love with her art, who draws her strength and comfort from the creative force within her. I love the “da da da inside my head” — a musician doesn’t just hear words in her head, she hears notes and melody. I’ve written before how much I love creative/artistic women (actually twice now), so Kate’s words hook me deep.
wake up by myself inside an empty room
theres no body next to mine to oooh
but my skin is warm and my heart is full
its the do do do do do do
Instead of focusing on what’s missing she focuses on what’s there, and being a glass half-full kinda person myself I love that positive outlook. Plus, there’s the idea of a woman’s warm skin and the do do do do that gets me a bit warm…
walking waking on a crowded street
with my headphones loud
so my hips can swing, so my head can nod
to the rock and roll to the boom boom beat
I’ve written before my ode to women’s hips, so these words that evoke a woman’s swaying hips… mmmmm…. and the boom boom beat…
and i find that im never alone
and i find that my heart is my home
and the music within makes me whole
a world that i built on my own
and i know that im never alone
and i know that my heart is my home
every missing piece of me
i can find in a melody
The chorus is beautiful, with the fantastic message of finding strength within, loving yourself, all wrapped within the words and energies of an artist. A world that I built on my own… as a writer I can totally grok that, and yeah– I find that writing gives me pleasure, gives me clarity, gives me company. But it applies to anyone really– everybody has some creative force within them, something that may not manifest in “the arts” but in more practical ways– in cooking, in raising kids, in pulling together the things into your house to make it a home. In the ways that you share love and make love. That creative energy can give you peace, give you strength, to smooth over the rough edges, to fill in the missing pieces… and to be the hook that draws a special someone to want to be a part of your story.
What do you think of Kate Earl’s “Melody” — do you find it as sexy as I do? What are your all-time favorite sexy songs?

and i know that my heart is my home
every missing piece of me
i can find in a melody
no matter what has ever come to me
i got my own kind of company
i got ba ba ba inside my head
and i sing songs back to back until i go to bed
theres a river in my mind thats never still
swirling , soothing all the time gives me a thrill
swimming in the notes that go
oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
wandering, waking in an empty wood
it is quiet here, i am powerful
i look down below serenade the world
from inside my soul
(chorus)
(sha-dup, sha-dup)when the walls begin to creep in (aaah, aaah)
(she-bop-she-bop)and the sky is fallin down (aaah, aaaahh)
(she-doop,she-doop)when im swallowed up in feelings
(she-bop, she-bop)i get lost inside the sound…
(chorus x 2)
